| 08 | ZAKK WYLDE: No American Should Speak Out
Against Our President During A Time Of War OZZY OSBOURNE/BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist Zakk Wylde says that he feels no sympathy for any celebrities crying the blues about being boycotted after they publicly spoke out against the president and the war in Iraq. "You know what, bro, that's fucked up," Wylde told Pitriff.com in a recent interview. "I mean, you don't talk out against our government. I can't stand these fuckers that complain about our government. I mean, if you don't like it so much, move the fuck out. I know they don't mind taking American money. It's pathetic to me." When asked if he thinks that THE DIXIE CHICKS are getting a raw deal since people won't buy their records now, Zakk said, "Where was I at when they made the rule that said that everyone had to buy your shit even if you sound like a cunt? I missed that declaration. You don't speak out against our president during a time of war. You just don't do that. Whether you agree or not, leave it alone. You're a singer, and your goddamn songs have nothing to do with the state of our government or the country's affairs. I hate people that say that it's their right to speak out, and then complain when people don't like what they say. Say that to me, and you might have to use your freedom of speech to tell the surgeon to put your teeth back in your mouth. (laughing)" |
| 12 | MACABRE To Release 'Murder Metal' In
September MACABRE are set to release their new full-length album, "Murder Metal", on September 23 through Season Of Mist Records. The album will be issued via a licensing agreement with Decomposed Records, an indie label owned and operated by the band and their management. This release will be a continuation of the group's 1993 classic "Sinister Slaughter" and will contain a collection of bizarre tales about various murderers and killers from around the world in their own unique style. Musically, MACABRE continue to experiment mixing classic folklore with metal, punk, jazz and of course nursery rhymes. Once again MACABRE brought on Grammy award winner Neil Kernon (CANNIBAL CORPSE, QUEENSRŸCHE, JUDAS PRIEST) to record the opus. Chicago's MACABRE have been known as true pioneers, creating their murderous music for over 15 years. MACABRE are and always have been: Corporate Death - guitar and vocals, Dennis the Menace - drums and Nefarious - bass and vocals. Following "Murder Metal" will be the highly anticipated re-release of the long out of print MACABRE classic "Grim Reality", which will include a newly re-mixed version of the entire release and the original 1986 recordings plus other surprises. The debut retail release of "The Macabre Minstrels" will also follow, exposing the world to murder metal unplugged. "The Macabre Minstrels" recordings are a truly innovative and twisted collection of songs. Some of the tracks that will be included on "Murder Metal" will be "Acid Bath Vampire", "Werewolf Of Bedburg", "Jack The Ripper" and a new Fritz Haarman song sung entirely in German. MACABRE are currently looking to put together diverse tour packages for Europe, North America and the world to support their new release. |

| 16 | ROB ZOMBIE Signs Deal To Write And
Direct 'House' Sequel Rob Zombie has inked a deal with Lions Gate Films to write and direct a sequel to his directorial debut, the horror feature "House of 1000 Corpses", according to Billboard.com. "House of 1000 Corpses" has earned more than $11 million in box office receipts since its U.S. release last month. Production on the sequel is slated to start in the fall, with an April 2004 release penciled in to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the original. "I am dying to get back behind the camera to deliver a sequel which will blow away the original," said Zombie. In "House of 1000 Corpses", two young couples take a misguided tour onto the back roads of America in search of a local legend known as Dr. Satan. Lost and stranded, they are set upon by a bizarre family of psychotics. Murder, cannibalism and satanic rituals are just a few of the 1000+ horrors that await. Written and directed by Zombie, making his feature film debut, the film stars cult favorites Sid Haig, Bill Mosley, Michael J. Pollard and Karen Black, along with newcomers, Sherri Moon and Chris Hardwick. Produced by Andy Gould, edited by Robert K. Lambert and accompanied by an original soundtrack featuring new music by Zombie. An influential multi-platinum musician and Grammy nominated artist, Zombie is also an MTV video award winner for his self-directed "More Human Than Human" video. His first feature film experience came when he was recruited by Mike Judge to animate the classic hallucinatory sequence of the feature "Beavis & Butt-Head Do America". He has composed songs for several feature films, including "Mission: Impossible II", "End of Days" and "The Crow: City of Angels". |
| 17 | TED NUGENT Uses Slurs In Radio
Interview, Gets Kicked Off The Air Two Denver disc jockeys stopped a live radio interview with Ted Nugent after he used derogatory racial terms for Asians and blacks, the Washington Post has reported. Rick Lewis and Michael Floorwax, morning talk show hosts on KRFX-FM, said that during an interview Monday (May 5), Nugent said one of the members of a group called the FUNK BROTHERS years ago complimented his guitar playing by using a racist term for blacks. "We've known Ted a long time and he's been on the show many times. So when he went down that road, we stopped him and gave him a chance to bail himself out, but he didn't take it," Floorwax said. Nugent also used derogatory racial terms for Asians on the air. The DJs said they got calls after the show from angry listeners, mostly from people saying they were glad Nugent was off the air. The station didn't receive any calls about it on Tuesday. Nugent is past president of the National Rifle Association and is known for his outspokenness. "Ted likes to shock people. He'll come on the show occasionally and drop a bomb like that and then step back to see the reaction it gets," Lewis said. "He loves that reputation of a shoot-from-the-hip kind of guy." The two DJs said Nugent is on the show about three times a year, but won't be back any time soon. |

| 23 | MURDERDOLLS, STONE SOUR To Team Up For
U.K. Tour MURDERDOLLS and STONE SOUR are set to terrorize the U.K. this July when they team up for a string of shows. The 'DOLLS were all set to play their own shows, but when they realized STONE SOUR were also in Europe, it seemed a fun idea to invite them along for the ride. Both bands are about to take a break to allow Joey Jordison, Corey Taylor and Jim Root return to the SLIPKNOT fold to work on the new album. MURDERDOLLS guitarist Jordison states, "MURDERDOLLS played with STONE SOUR in Des Moines on New Years Eve and we had a blast. When we started booking our U.K. headline tour, we thought let's give them a call and see if they wanted to join up. We share some fans and have different fans so we thought it could be a great tour for everyone. This will be the last tour this year for MURDERDOLLS and STONE SOUR before we go back to SLIPKNOT, so why not go out on top creating mayhem and destroying clubs together! Don't miss this tour!" STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor was equally enthusiastic: "The U.K. is going to fucking burn under the sheer power of both STONE SOUR and MURDERDOLLS. It is an honor and a privilege to wreak havoc over there again." Although the shows are "double-headline", partying rules dictate that MURDERDOLLS will close each show. Tickets are priced at £16, except London, which is £18. Confirmed dates are as follows: Jul. 07 – Cardiff, UK @ Uni (MURDERDOLLS only) Jul. 08 – Nottingham, UK @ Rock City Jul. 09 – Birmingham, UK @ Academy Jul. 10 – Glasgow, UK @ Barrowlands Jul. 11 – Manchester, UK @ Apollo Jul. 12 – London, UK @ Brixton Academy Both bands will be releasing singles to coincide with the tour. STONE SOUR set the pace with "Inhale" on July 7 and MURDERDOLLS follow it up with their take on the Billy Idol classic "White Wedding", which hits the stores on July 14. SLIPKNOT reconvene in August for work on their third album, the follow-up to the U.K. No.1 album "Iowa", due in early 2004. |
| 25 | LULLACRY To Make U.S. Live Debut At
MILWAUKEE METALFEST Finnish hard rock sensation LULLACRY have just been added to this year's Milwaukee Metalfest line-up. This will mark the group's first appearance in the U.S. Guitarist Sami Vauhkonen had the following to say regarding the band's live performance: "LULLACRY is about the sweat and action! There must be something to look at on the stage. Also, you have to work hard with the band. You have to know what you want to sound like. It's bullshit if artist say that only amateurs rehearse! I think you must have guts to put your songs out on the stage with the different arrangement if needed. Now we've been touring in Finland. In the summer we'll do festivals basically in Finland, including a one-off festival gig in Milwaukee. In the autumn we've planned to do an European tour. I hope that we can do a tour someday in North America. It would great." LULLACRY will release their new single, "Alright Tonight", on May 23 through Spinefarm Records. "Alright Tonight" will be backed by a re-recorded version of the title track from the group's 1999 debut album, "Sweet Desire", featuring new vocalist Tanja Lainio, who replaced Tanja Kemppainen (currently in SOULGRIND) last summer. "Alright Tonight" comes off the group's third album, "Crucify My Heart", available in North America through Century Media Records. |

| 28 | CKY, SYSTEMATIC To Open For METALLICA In
San Francisco Philadelphia punk/metal outfit CKY have landed the support slot for METALLICA at the Fillmore in San Francisco, California on Sunday, May 18. San Francisco Bay Area's own SYSTEMATIC, who were previously signed to METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich's now-defunct record label imprint The Music Company (distributed through Elektra), will open the show at the same venue on Monday, May 19. SYSTEMATIC guitarist Adam Ruppell posted the following message to the band's official web site shortly receiving the news that the band were selected to open for METALLICA at the Fillmore: "So I was up the other night when I received a phone call," Ruppel wrote. "It was a little Danish drummer that plays in a band called METALLICA. He just called to ask if SYSTEMATIC would want to open a show for them back home. So here all you systemaddicts go... "May 19th SYSTEMATIC will be opening for this little band out of San Francisco called METALLICA for the one of the free shows they're doing for their fan club! After years of knowing the MET family we finally get to share a stage with them. I have to say that the band is stoked and can't wait for the day to get here. "I also have to state that I have been very lucky to hear the new METALLICA album. I must say it's the heaviest shit I've heard from METALLICA in ages and trust me they still got it. We all need to root for METALLICA to go back on top and get rid of alot of the crap that is out there. The album will blow your mind. So make sure you get your copy." In related news, FloridaToday.com filed an interesting report on the current and future state of the record industry, particularly as it relates to online music piracy. Among the artists interviewed for the story was METALLICA frontman James Hetfield, who offered the following comment on the subject of illegal music downloading: "The record companies are history. They won't be around much longer unless they get with it and morph into something new that's going to help get music directly to the masses. The Internet is about as direct as it gets. Putting a CD in a store is like putting a rotary dial phone in front of a kid: 'What's that? There's no antenna.' Downloading is a sobering change." METALLICA's forthcoming "St. Anger" CD, which hits retail on June 10, will include such incentives as a companion DVD of rehearsals, a CD-ROM peek into the band's upcoming video game and an elaborate booklet. "The idea was to throw out a bone that you won't get in a download," Hetfield said. He's relieved that security measures so far have thwarted leaks. "Recording was like working in a bank. The hard drives were in a safe. Nothing left the studio. But then you hand it off to the record company to mass-produce it, and you have to let it go." "It's not the METALLICAs and MADONNAs and LINKIN PARKs and BRUCE SPRINGSTEENs that take the hardest hit, it's the 10 developing bands each label has on its roster every month," METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich added. "That gets trimmed to three. Instead of getting a million dollars to make videos and tour, you go home if nothing happens in the first five minutes of that project. Young artists won't have a chance." Hetfield chimed in, "What about the band that's on the cusp of make it or break it? It's so ironic that a band won't be successful because the people who really like their stuff are stealing it." |
| 29 | STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Singer Officially
Joins Ex-GUNS N' ROSES Band! STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer Scott Weiland has confirmed that he will be the singer for the band featuring former GUNS N' ROSES members Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass) and Matt Sorum (drums). According to Weiland, the secretive group, which has been working under the name "THE PROJECT", will be called RELOADED. "Yeah, I'm in the band," Weiland told Rolling Stone during MARILYN MANSON's show at Los Angeles' Key Club on Monday night. "We signed the contract." Sorum, who attended the MANSON show with Weiland, was more guarded about the singer's involvement. "I need to ask my whole band before we can say anything," he said. "We left the studio tonight to come down here to see MANSON." The band formerly known as "THE PROJECT" had been searching for a frontman for several months. In addition to Weiland, vocalists known to have tried out for the singer position in the group include Sebastian Bach (ex-SKID ROW), Kelly Shaefer (ex-NEUROTICA, ATHEIST), Travis Meeks (DAYS OF THE NEW), Mike Matijevic (STEELHEART), Pat Briggs (PSYCHOTICA), A. Jay Popoff (LIT), and Joshua Todd (ex-BUCKCHERRY). The five-piece band also includes ex-LOADED/WASTED YOUTH guitarist Dave Kushner. As previously reported, RELOADED recently contributed an original song titled "Set Me Free" to "The Hulk" soundtrack to go with the already announced cover of PINK FLOYD's "Money" for the soundtrack to director F. Gary Gray's upcoming remake of the 1969 British crime comedy "The Italian Job". "The Hulk" premieres June 20, three weeks after "The Italian Job". Weiland, who was reported to have re-entered a treatment facility last month after an apparent drug relapse, was previously said to be finishing up work on his second solo album with producer Josh Abraham (STAIND, ORGY, CRAZY TOWN). |
| 30 | PHILIP ANSELMO: Done With PANTERA,
Sticking With SUPERJOINT RITUAL Vocalist Phil Anselmo says that he is done with PANTERA and he intends to focus all his time and energy on SUPERJOINT RITUAL. "There was a lot of business with Warner Bros. and this and that DOWN and PANTERA and this and that, and etc. etc." Anselmo was quoted as saying by MetalIndex.com. "Whatever. Pretty much what I'm doing here is I'm sticking with SUPERJOINT, and I'm not doing fuckin' anything else. This is where I'm most comfortable and this it the type of music that I wanna do, you know?" Anselmo says that he is proud of what PANTERA achieved and is also proud that they pulled the plug rather than faded away. "If you think about it, PANTERA never went away until we personally said, 'Fuck it'." Asked if he sees patching up differences and rejoining DOWN or PANTERA, Anselmo said, "Never say never... [but] not right now." SUPERJOINT RITUAL's sophomore album, "A Lethal Dose Of American Hatred", is due on July 22 through Sanctuary Records. |

| 30 | DEFTONES Joined By TAPROOT Singer At
Detroit Gig DEFTONES brought a special guest — TAPROOT frontman Steve Richards — onstage Thursday (May 8) at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit. Richards joined the group for the song, "Teething", DEFTONES' contribution to the 1996 soundtrack for "The Crow: City Of Angels". DEFTONES singer Chino Moreno noted that TAPROOT — who hail from nearby Ann Arbor — occasionally covered "Teething" in their shows. When Richards didn't immediately appear, Moreno said, "Get up here or I'll tell everyone your band sucks." DEFTONES are in the middle of their unofficial guerrilla tour, which is set to conclude at the end of the month. The band will then head to Europe for some additional shows. DEFTONES will return to North American for the METALLICA-headlined Summer Sanitarium tour that kicks off July 4 in Pontiac, Michigan. The group's new album, "Deftones", comes out May 20 through Maverick Records. |
