Adversary "Demo 2005"

These days there are a lot of great upcoming metal bands in Denmark. The metal scene has never been in such good condition as it is now. The major bands in Denmark are all signed to some real heavyweight labels, which mean extensively touring on the European continent as well as in USA. And many bands are waiting to take over, and while they are doing that, they are busy establishing themselves on the Danish metal scene. One such band is Adversary from Aarhus. Aarhus is Denmarks second largest city, and the home base of several great metal bands. Adversary combines death and trash in a very unique way. And their vocalist Magnus Jørgensen growls with such authority, that it sounds like he has been a vocalist for much longer than he actually has. In terms of musical expression Adversary is somewhat a trip down memory lane. At least, they are to me because I can’t help thinking about those almost ancient metallers Artillerty, who in the mid-80’ties put out an album called “Fear of Tomorrow” That album is still a classic on the Danish trash scene. |
The Adversary demo “Demo 2005” contains 3 songs of equal level in brutality and atmosphere. The first song is “Demon Spawn” which is launched by a flat liner sound. Somehow I don’t think it has anything to do with the actual song. Maybe it’s a part of the production, who knows? The song which is probably the most brutal one on the album is tied together by some rather melodic passages and a very impressive guitar solo. Second song “We Are the Dead” is equal in tempo and density. Last song on the album is “Gunpoint” and there are certainly no holds barred here either. Don’t get me wrong here; the songs do not sound the same. They are indeed different, but they kick ass in the same way. And that is exactly what that kind of music should do – kick some serious ass. Thumbs up for a dedicated band, with some serious music to present.

| And at last, a couple of words from the band about the new record and the history of the band: Adversary is from Aarhus and was put together in October 2004. The demo is produced by the bands bassist Jonas Møller together with the rest of the band in January 2005. When it comes to genre and expression, the band strive to combine ordinary elements from trash and death with more melodic passages. The band thinks that this add the perfect intensity and brutality to the music. "Demon Spawn" is the first song ever written by Adversary. The band agreed that, they would compose a song that was simple in its construction as well as very brutal and rapid. | "We are The Dead" is a little more melodic, which took a little more time to compose. An element of variation was put into the song, by adding more trashy and melodic riffs and the intro/chorus was supposed to be more earcandy than "Demon Spawn". "Gunpoint" - pretty much the same recipe as "We are.....", but with a metalcorelike breakdown passage in the middle of the song. It felt like the right thing to so, in order to create some sort of consistency between the 3 songs. The music is written by Ken and the lyrics by Magnus. | |||||
