Devilyn "The Past Against the Future" |
|
Devilyn – the expression and attitude is pretty much as the bands name indicate – raw power and extreme brutality. And combined with the most evil vocal I’ve heard for a long time, this album is a must have for any sworn death head around. The vocal is truly awesome and fits the band like a glove – this is really a great outfit. Devilyn has been around for some years now, but despite that they haven’t lost their edge. They’re as sharp as ever before. The title “The Past Against the Future” indicates that the album is a blend of new and old material. There’s also a killervideo on the record. It’s always nice to be able to add faces to the music. Nothing special about the video though – was taken in some abandoned worn out factory building. Good surroundings for this kind of music. Devilyn aim high with the first song on the album, which is a cover version of the old Carcass tune ”Heartwork” They’ve managed to fulfil my expectations with this one. The song has been given a personal touch, but the core is the very same as when Carcass did it. Devilyn has not made any compromises with the song, or altered the essence of it. Song #2 to #7 is from the earlier years. When the band was called Cerebral Concussion. The songs were recorded in the spring of 1994, and is a powerfull and groovy as anyone could expect. But there’s a few flaws in the production. It’s probably only due to poor equipment since the essence and attitude of the music is great. It’s easy to notice that here’s a band that are not only in for a short career. |
They want to make it all the way, and they’re undoubtedly determent to put in what ever amount of work it takes – total dedication this is. And it should be nothing less than that. Any other way would be a complete waste of time – not only for the band members, but also for the fans who show up at gigs or but the records. Since I received the record from the label some time ago, I’ve listened to it a few times. And I must say that those few production flaws are nothing but a mere scratch in the surface. The music is tight and powerfull as hell weather they’re called Cerebral Concussion or Devilyn. The 6 songs from the old days ”The Rule”, ”A Shadow of Acheron”, ”Into Centuries”, ” My Own Creation”, ”Illusions” and ”An Astral Dream”, actually haven’t been released on cd before. When they were originally published, it was on tape. A limited stock of 900 units which was soon sold out. They also gave the band mega attention from fans plus a huge pile of positive reviews from national and international press. The songs ”Deceived Conscience”, ”Testimony” and ”The Past Against The Future”, represent the newest part of the Devilyn recordings. They’re as brutal and violent as the first half of the record. So if you’re into the more brutal kind of death metal, I’m convinced that Devilyn will be a treat for you. They don’t compromise – there’s no holds barred here. This is is metal in the purest and strongest form ever. |
