Serpentia

Dark Fields of Pain

It has not been an easy task to categorize a band like Serpentia. Not that it’s downright necessary but it’s one of the first things a reviewer does, when taking on a new record. Some people seem to have an urge to know very precisely what sort of music a certain band play. Besides it actually gives a hint of what we’re taking about.

The fact sheet from the record company state that Serpentia is a deathmetalband. Well, up to a certain point they are, but I also noticed some influences from genres line dark ambient and Goth. So it seems that Serpentia has taken elements from some of the better genres, and mixed it all to a unique blend of their own!

They have done a great job getting the follow-up to their highly acclaimed debut “…….and the Angels Descented to Earth”! “Dark Fields of Pain” is loaded with lots of brutal rhythm and impudent fierce energy. And it shows in many different ways.

The record could cause some degree of confusion among the listeners, due to the variety in the musical expression. But the same variety also secures that the listener is never left in a state of dullness or boredom – there’s also something happening on the record that requires the outmost attention from the listener. I consider it almost impossible to enter the state of boredom when listening to Serpentia – their musical attitude is way too radical and intense.

My personal favourite on the album is the seventh track with the title “Dark Fields of Pain” – also the title track of the record, which definitely has the most aggressive expression of the entire record. Runners up for best track are the songs “Waiting for Wings” and “The Worst Enemy”, where no economization with musical brutality and energy has been observed.

Way to go Serpentia – I’m already looking forward to the next release.
